GW Volleyball's Whyte, Armstrong Earn A-10 Weekly Honors

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - George Washington volleyball junior Lauren Whyte and sophomore Jamie Armstrong have been named the Atlantic 10 Volleyball Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, the league office announced Monday. Whyte totaled 44 kills against just 12 errors (.239) in GW's victories over Saint Louis (Nov. 4, 3-2) and Duquesne (Nov. 5, 3-2). She started her weekend by swinging .258 with 19 kills and just three errors against the Billikens on Friday night. She added nine digs and four blocks (one solo, three assist) in the five-set triumph. In Saturday's five-set victory over Duquesne, Whyte posted her seventh double-double of 2011 with a season-high 25 kills and 10 digs. She was instrumental in the Colonials' 30-29 fourth-set victory, totaling 12 of her 25 kills with zero errors (.667). Monday's award marks the fourth time in her career Whyte has earned weekly honors from the A-10. Armstrong averaged 1.30 blocks per set in GW's perfect weekend to earn her third A-10 weekly honor of the season. On Friday against Saint Louis, the Monroe, Wis., native totaled nine block assists, including three in the decisive fifth-set victory, while adding seven kills against one error (.400) and five digs. She continued her strong play at the net in Saturday's five-set victory over Duquesne, as she finished with four block assists, three service aces and, for the second night in a row, added seven kills against one error. GW Volleyball has clinched a spot in the Atlantic 10 Championship, Nov. 18-20 in Dayton, Ohio, and will conclude the regular season this weekend with a road trip to the Northeast. The Colonials visit Rhode and Fordham at 7 p.m., on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
