Volleyball's Ruth Lazzari Named A-10 Player of the Week

Nov. 17, 2003

WASHINGTON, DC - Senior Ruth Lazzari (Seal Beach, CA/Connelly) has been named the Atlantic 10 Conference Player of the Week for volleyball, the league office has announced. The outside hitter led GW with 42 kills in three matches last week as the Colonials posted a 2-1 record.

Lazzari hit .429 with 15 kills and five digs in GW's 3-0 sweep of La Salle Friday night at Smith Center. She then hit .306 with 15 kills and 13 digs against Temple on Senior Day Saturday afternoon. It marked her 15th double-double of the season.

Lazzari is a two-time Atlantic 10 All-Conference player each of the past two seasons and has been voted to three All-Tournament teams this season (at George Mason, GW and Rutgers).

Lazzari's statistics for the week: three matches, nine games, 42 kills (4.67 kpg) and eight hitting errors in 97 attempts for a .351 hitting percentage, three assists, one service ace, 25 digs (2.78 dpg), a block solo and a block assist.

Lazzari leads the team in digs with 360, and is second on the team in kills with 356.

Third-seeded GW (21-9, 8-6 A-10) faces second-seeded Dayton Friday in the first round of the A-10 Tournament in Philadelphia. That match is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. at Temple University's McGonigle Hall. Fourth-seeded Xavier and host Temple play in the 5:30 p.m. opening match. The winners advance to the championship final at 7 p.m. Saturday.
