Volleyball's Lindsey Vernand Wins Fourth A-10 Rookie Award

Nov. 18, 2002

WASHINGTON, DC - Freshman Lindsey Vernand (Huntington Beach, CA/Huntington Beach) has been named the Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the Week for volleyball, the league office announced Monday. It marks the fourth time this season Vernand has won the award. She also was selected for the honor on Oct. 7, Oct. 21 and Nov. 5.

In GW's three matches last week, the 6-foot Californian hit .300 with 45 kills while committing just 12 errors in 110 swings as GW posted a 2-1 record and secured the No. 3 seed in the Atlantic 10 Volleyball Championship Tournament.

Vernand is currently second on the Colonials in digs with 365 (3.32 dpg) and ranks third on the team in both kills (299) and service aces (29). She has recorded 11 double-doubles (double figure kills and digs) this season.

Vernand's statistics for the week: three matches, 12 games, 45 kills, 12 errors in 110 attacks for a .300 hitting percentage, two service aces, 36 digs and four block assists.

The Colonials (18-12, 8-6 A-10) travel to Cincinnati Friday to face No. 2 seed Dayton (22-6, 11-3 A-10) in the first round of the A-10 Tournament at Xavier University's Cintas Center. The final takes place Saturday at 7:00 p.m. Top-seeded Temple (23-6, 13-1 A-10) and No. 4-seed Xavier (16-13, 7-7 A-10) are the other teams in the tournament field.
