WASHINGTON - The George Washington volleyball team returns to the Atlantic 10 Championship as the No. 3 seed and will face No. 6 Rhode Island on Friday night at 7:30 p.m., at the Charles E. Smith Center.
GW (15-13, 10-4 A-10) earned the No. 3 seed after posting 10 conference wins this season, the most in a season since going 14-2 en route to capturing the 2002 A-10 Championship title.
No. 1 Duquesne (18-9, 12-2 A-10) and No. 2 VCU (24-7, 11-3) each earned first-round byes and will await the winners of Friday's quarterfinal matches. No. 4 Saint Louis (13-16, 9-5 A-10) will face No. 5 Dayton (14-12, 8-6 A-10) at 5:00 p.m., on Friday ahead of GW's rematch with Rhode Island (15-15, 7-7 A-10).
GW and Rhode Island have met twice this season, with each team picking up a victory on the road. The Colonials outlasted the Rams in Kingston, R.I., 3-2, on October 6. The Rams evened the season series with a 3-1 victory over the Colonials on November 10.
The Atlantic 10 Championship returns to the Charles E. Smith Center for the third time overall and the first time since 1991. The Colonials are 2-2 all-time in A-10 Championship matches played at the Smith Center.
