Volleyball's Lazzari Named First Team All-Atlantic 10

Nov. 19, 2001

WASHINGTON, DC (Nov. 19) - George Washington sophomore Ruth Lazzari (Seal Beach, CA/Connelly) has been selected to the All-Atlantic 10 first team and freshman Britta Stroman (Edina, MN/Edina) has been named to the All-Rookie team in voting conducted among Conference head coaches, the Conference announced.

Lazzari led the Colonials in games played (82), kills (278), kills per game (3.39) and digs (257). Lazzari's 257 digs ranked her sixth in the Atlantic 10, while her 278 kills were seventh most in the conference.

Stroman, a two-time Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week selection, led the team with a .211 hitting percentage and finished third on the team with 200 kills. Stroman also finished tied with Lazzari for most games played.

Among the Atlantic 10's major awards Xavier's Sara Bachus was named the Player of the Year, while her teammate Molly Martin was named both Setter and Rookie of the Year. Dayton's Pete Hoyer and Duquesne's Steve Opperman were named Co-Coaches of the Year.

The Colonials finished the season with an overall record of 6-17 and an Atlantic 10 record of 5-10. Next season, Lazzari and Stroman will help lead a team that will return 13 of 14 players.
