NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - GW volleyball junior Kelsey Newman and freshman Chidima Osuchukwu were each named to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference Second Team and Oshuchukwu earned a spot on the All-Rookie Team, the league office announced on Thursday.
The honors mark the first career A-10 All-Conference awards for both players.
Newman has posted a team-best 267 kills this season and ranks eighth in the conference with 3.07 kills per set entering this weekend's Atlantic 10 Championship. The Charlotte, N.C., native has posted double-digit kills in 14 matches, including four double-doubles, and was named the A-10 Offensive Player of the Week on Nov. 4.
Osuchukwu joins Newman on the All-Conference Second Team and also becomes the first Colonial to be named to the All-Rookie squad since Candace Silva-Martin and Lauren Whyte were both honored at the conclusion of the 2009 season. Osuchukwu ranks third in the Atlantic 10 and 62nd in NCAA Division I with a .357 attack percentage. A two-time A-10 Rookie of the Week, the Virginia Beach, Va., native leads the A-10 with 31 solo blocks while averaging 1.01 blocks per set. She also ranks second on the team with 235 kills and second in the conference with a .391 attack percentage in A-10 matches.
No. 3 seed George Washington will face sixth-seeded Rhode Island on Friday evening in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic 10 Championship at the Charles E. Smith Center. For more information on the A-10 Championship, including tickets, live stats and live video, visit A-10 Championship Central.
