Volleyball's Lindsey Vernand Voted A-10 Rookie of the Year
Nov. 22, 2002 WASHINGTON, DC - Freshman Lindsey Vernand (Huntington Beach, CA/Huntington Beach) has been named the Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the Year for volleyball Thursday as voted by the league's eight head coaches. Also selected for postseason honors were juniors Sarah Hokom (Caldwell, ID/Caldwell) and Ruth Lazzari (Seal Beach, CA/Connelly), both named to the 12-member All-Conference Team and freshman Shannon Parks (Marietta, GA/Walton) who joins Vernand on the six-member All-Rookie Team. Vernand becomes just GW's second A-10 Rookie of the Year for volleyball joining former Colonial Megan Korver in 1995. Vernand is a four-time A-10 Rookie of the Week earning the honor on Oct. 7, Oct. 21, Nov. 5 and Nov. 18. She is currently second on the Colonials in digs with 365 (3.32 dpg) and ranks third on the team in both kills (299) and service aces (29). She has recorded 11 double-doubles (double figure kills and digs) this season. Hokom is a two-time A-10 Player of the Week and leads the Colonials in kills with 449 (4.12 kpg), service aces with 40, blocks with 64 total (22 solo, 52 assists) and double-doubles with 18. Lazzari is the league-leader in digs with 468 (4.25 dpg). She has recorded 17 double-doubles and is a repeat winner having been a member of the 2001 A-10 All-Conference team as a sophomore. Parks is second on the team with 36 service aces and 62 total blocks (12 solo, 51 assists).
The third-seeded Colonials (18-12, 8-6 A-10) are in Cincinnati to face No. 2 seed Dayton (22-6, 11-3 A-10) in the first round of the A-10 Tournament Friday at 7:00 p.m. at Xavier University's Cintas Center. The final takes place Saturday at 7:00 p.m. Top-seeded Temple (23-6, 13-1 A-10) and fourth-seeded Xavier (16-13, 7-7 A-10) are the other teams in the tournament field.
