WASHINGTON, D.C. - The George Washington University volleyball program has announced that two student-athletes have signed national letters-of-intent to attend the University next fall. GW head coach Jojit Coronel has announced that Abigail Hatter (Manassas, VA/Forest Park H.S.) and Lindsey Vernand (Huntington Beach, CA /Huntington Beach H.S.) will play volleyball for the Colonials next fall.
Hatter, a 6-foot-3 middle blocker from nearby Manassas, VA, was a standout at Forest Park High School where she earned 2001 All-Area Player of the Year honors as a senior. She also was named First Team All-District and All-Area for 2001 as she led Forrest Park to the Virginia High School state quarterfinals. Academically, Hatter made the Principal's Honor Roll with a 3.4 grade-point average. She has completed more than 200 hours of community service for her high school's Learn and Serve program. She also plays for the Asics Metro Maryland Volleyball Club.
"Abigail will fit in nicely in our front court," said Coronel. "Her height and skills at that position will make an immediate impact. She is very quick and, most importantly, aggressive. She will put up a huge block and can attack the ball at will. Her addition to the team will make the middle position even more competitive for the 2002 season. Like Lindsey Vernand, Abigail has the potential to be an All-Conference player her first year."
Vernand, a 6-foot outside hitter from Huntington Beach, CA, was the 2001 High School Athlete of the Season for 2001. She is a three-year scholar-athlete who has maintained a 4.0 GPA. She plays for one of the top club teams in the country (Laguna Beach VBC).
"Lindsey is a very athletic volleyball player who brings height to our left side as well. She will make an immediate impact as a primary attacker as well as an impact blocker. Her experience and ball control skills will also pay dividends immediately. We will need Lindsey to get up to speed immediately with our offense so she becomes accustomed to taking a huge amount of swings on either the left or right side. She has the potential to be an All-Conference player her first year."
