Women's Water Polo Places Fifth in Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships

April 3, 2001

WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington women's water team finished fifth overall this past weekend after receiving an at-large bid to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship tournament.

The sixth-seeded Colonials (11-8, 7-4) faced the second-seeded Brown University in their first match on Saturday, March 31. GW battled to a 4-4 tie at halftime, when the Bruins exploded in the third period, outscoring the Colonials 4-1. GW was unable to recover, losing the match 6-9. GW was led by freshman Mia Fabian and senior Heather Walenga who each scored two goals for the contest.

In their second match of the day, GW faced third-seeded Hartwick College. The Hawks proved too much for the Colonials, holding GW to four goals, while scoring 11 of their own. The Colonials again played a solid first half, holding Hartwick to three goals, and only trailing by one heading into the third period. However, the Hawks would surge on offense scoring six goals in the third and two in the fourth to top GW 11-4.

On Sunday, April 1, the Colonials faced the fourth-seeded Gannon University in their final match of the tournament. GW overwhelmed the Golden Knights, sprinting out to a 5-2 lead after one period of play. The Colonials would never look back, racking up a 13-5 win over Gannon. Fabian, Walenga and freshman Vanessa Fravel scored three goals apiece to lead GW.

Fabian was named to the All-Tournament Second Team after scoring six goals, with six steals and two assists on the weekend. Fravel also was recognized receiving an All-Tournament Honorable Mention. Fravel scored five goals, with two assists and three steals.

The Colonials next travel to Grove City, PA to compete in the Southern Championships from April 6-7. GW's regular season play earned the third seed overall and face Gannon University at 12:30 pm and Washington and Jefferson College at 5:10 pm on Saturday, April 6. GW's results from Saturday will determine their opponents on Sunday, April 7.
