GW Women's Water Polo Wins Opener, 13-11, at Villanova
Littlejohn Tallies Career-High Seven Points in Victory
Feb. 1, 2014
VILLANOVA, Pa. - Senior Allison Littlejohn scored a career-high seven points to lead the George Washington women's water polo team to a season-opening 13-11 victory at Villanova on Saturday afternoon.
Littlejohn tallied three goals and four assists and added three steals in the win, while senior Rachael Bentley scored a team-best four goals and seniors Katherine Berry and Megan Brolley and sophomore Hannah Cox each had two. Junior goalkeeper Chandler Vilander finished one shy of her career high with 11 saves.
After a 3-3 first period, GW held a 6-4 halftime lead and was up 8-6 with 4:52 left in the third quarter before the Wildcats scored the last two goals of the period to tie the game at 8-8.
The teams traded the first two goals of the fourth quarter before the Colonials rattled off three-in-a-row to take a commanding 12-9 lead with 3:32 to go. After sitting out the entire third period in foul trouble, Brolley came back in the fourth and jump-started GW's counterattack, scoring both of her goals in the final stanza.
"Our defense was very good throughout the game," said head coach Scott Reed. "The key to the game was that fourth quarter when we really got our counterattack game going, scoring five goals in the period."
The Colonials return to action next weekend at the Princeton Invitational where they will face Wagner, VMI and Iona Feb. 8-9 at the annual tournament.
