Bentley Matches School Record in GW Women's Water Polo's 14-9 Win over Villanova
Junior Tallies Six Assists, Nine Points in Colonials' First Win of Season
Feb. 10, 2013
PRINCETON, N.J. - Junior Rachael Bentley matched school records for most assists and points in a game as the George Washington women's water polo team defeated Villanova, 14-9, on the second day of the Princeton Invitational.
Bentley equaled her own record with six assists, a feat also accomplished by three others and most recently by former teammate Monica Hanson against Siena on Feb. 25, 2012. Bentley also notched her second hat trick of the young season to give her nine points, matching Heather Walenga in 2000 and Mia Fabian in 2001 for the most points in a game in GW history. In addition, the Riverside, Calif., native recorded two steals and two ejections drawn.
GW (1-2) led 3-2 after the first quarter and 9-5 at halftime, but Villanova scored the first three goals of the third period to pull within one, 9-8, at the 4:25 mark. After GW head coach Scott Reed called a timeout, the Colonials scored the final three goals of the quarter and limited the Wildcats to just one goal the rest of the game in the 14-9 victory.
The Colonials excelled on power plays against Villanova, scoring on 6-of-7 extra-man opportunities.
GW concluded the tournament with a 12-9 exhibition win over the New York Aquatic Club. The Colonials clung to a 5-4 lead at halftime but pulled away in the second half, outscoring NYAC 5-1 in the third quarter.
Bentley led GW with four goals in the game, while junior Megan Brolley tallied three. Sesana and Vilander combined for six saves in the cage.
The Colonials return to action next weekend at Bucknell's Bison Invitational, where they will face Bucknell, Hartwick, Marist and Villanova Feb. 16-17.
