LEWISBURG, Pa. - Freshman Alana Ponce tied the GW women's water polo record with eight goals in a game, highlighting a season-opening sweep Saturday at the Bison Invitational.

The Colonials began the day with an 18-8 win over Siena at Bucknell's Kinney Natatorium before Ponce produced her record-tying performance in a 16-10 victory over Gannon. The newcomer from Gig Harbor, Wash., joins teammate Jacqueline Bywater (twice in 2015) and Mia Fabian (2001) in the program record book with her eight goals.

For the day, Ponce finished with nine goals and two assists to help GW earn a winning start to its first season under head coach Barry King.

GW 18, Siena 8: The Colonials outscored the Saints in every quarter of their season opener and cruised to a comfortable victory.

Maddy Johnson, Ally Jochim and Allison DeCicco netted three goals apiece to pace 10 GW scorers.

Jaleh Moaddeli shined in her collegiate debut, posting two goals, three assists and three steals. Fellow freshmen Ponce, Grace Heck and Dara Bleiberg also scored.

Katherine Moeller made 10 saves in net and also came up with a pair of steals to anchor the defensive effort. The Colonials racked up 21 steals in all, led by Heck's team-high four.

Gannon scored five times in the third quarter to pull within 11-9 before GW dug in and closed out the victory with a five-goal final period.

In addition to Ponce's memorable effort, Bywater and Heck each tallied five points via two goals and three assists. Scarlett Hallahan, Maggie Ball and Moaddeli also found the net in the victory.

Moeller posted five more saves in her second win between the pipes of the day.
