Women's Water Polo Finishes Winning Weekend
Colonials split Sunday to finish the Bison Invitational at 3-1
LEWISBURG, Pa. - Freshmen Dara Bleiberg, Grace Heck and Alana Ponce scored four goals apiece Sunday afternoon as George Washington women's water polo knocked off Saint Francis (Pa.), 21-13, to finish the Bison Invitational.
The Colonials fell to host Bucknell, 11-8, earlier in the day at Kinney Natatorium before bouncing back with an offensive explosion against the Red Flash to close the season's opening weekend at 3-1.
After a promising debut Saturday, GW's newcomers continued to carry a heavy offensive load Sunday with five freshmen combining for 20 of the 29 goals between the two contests. Bleiberg took the lead, totaling seven goals and four assists in all.
Bucknell 11, GW 8: The Colonials got off to a strong start in the opener but couldn't sustain it down the stretch.
GW led 6-3 on Heck's score with 3:18 left in the opening half before Bucknell ran off the next six goals. The Bison went ahead for good at 7-6 on Kali Hyham's goal late in the third quarter.
GW got three goals from Bleiberg and a pair from freshman Jaleh Moaddeli. Ponce notched a goal and three assists.
GW 21, Saint Francis (Pa.) 13: The Colonials found the big finish they needed in the finale to shake off the Red Flash.
GW's lead was 13-11 before an eight-goal fourth quarter. Seven different Colonials scored in that run with Heck finding the net twice.
In addition to her four goals, Bleiberg recorded four assists and three steals against Saint Francis. Jacqueline Bywater posted three goals and two assists, while Ally Jochim pitched in two goals, one assist and two steals.
GW added a new entry to its record book for the second day in a row. The 21 goals rank No. 4 on the program's all-time single-game scoring list. The victory marked the Colonials' biggest offensive output since they netted 22 against Mercyhurst last February.
On Saturday, Ponce notched eight goals against Gannon to tie the program's individual single-game scoring record.
UP NEXT: GW heads to the Princeton Invitational next weekend for four games over three days. The Colonials are slated to face No. 13 Wagner, No. 21 Princeton and No. 24 Marist, as well as Iona, at the event.
