GW Women's Water Polo Splits Pair at Bison Invite
Donoghue Tallies Five Goals in 10-9 Win Over Bucknell
Feb. 16, 2013
LEWISBURG, Pa. - The George Washington women's water polo team split two games on the first day of the Bison Invitational, edging host Bucknell, 10-9, before falling to Hartwick, 23-12.
Bucknell (1-1) led 1-0 after the first quarter, but GW (2-3) opened the second period with four straight goals to grab a 4-1 lead. The Colonials outscored the Bison, 7-2, in the quarter to take a 7-3 lead into halftime. Freshman Erin Donoghue scored four of her career-best five goals in the deciding second period.
GW led 9-4 with 2:31 left in the third quarter, but Bucknell scored five of the game's final six goals. The Bison made it a one-goal game, 10-9, with 58 seconds left and had a man-up opportunity with 33 seconds to go to try to tie it. Taylor Barnett got off two shots before time expired, but was unable to find the back of the net and GW held on for the win.
Donoghue led all players with five goals in the game and sophomore goalkeeper Chandler Vilander made six saves. Hannah Sunday and Julianne Valdes led the Bison with three goals apiece, and goalie Rena Heim recorded 12 stops.
In the second game of the day, Hartwick jumped out to an 8-1 lead after the first quarter and never looked back, leading 14-3 at halftime. The Colonials played even with the Hawks in the second half with nine goals apiece, but could not climb out of the deficit.
Junior Katherine Berry led the Colonials with four goals, while classmate Rachael Bentley tallied six points on three goals and three assists. It marked Bentley's third hat trick in five games so far this season. Junior Megan Brolley added five points on two goals and three helpers. Vilander, freshman Caterina Sesana and sophomore Jessie Sinkula combined for four saves in the cage.
Kamila Zakirova and Jemma Dendy Young scored four goals apiece to lead the Hawks, who are receiving votes in the CWPA Varsity Top 20 national poll.
The Colonials return to action on Sunday when they take on Marist at 11:30 a.m. and Villanova at 6:30 p.m. on the final day of action at the Bison Invitational.
