Women's Water Polo Opens Season With 1-3 Record

Feb. 17, 2004

PRINCETON, NJ - GW's women's water polo team finished its first weekend of play with a 1-3 record. GW's victory came against Wagner with a 10-7 win. All three losses came against ranked opponents. The season opener was a 17-4 loss to No. 9 Michigan. After defeating Wagner in the second game, GW lost to No. 17 Brown, 8-3, and No. 19 Princeton, 13-3.

In the first game of the year, GW faced the No. 9 Michigan Wolverines who started the game with aggressive pressure defense and a quick offensive attack. Michigan took a 5-0 lead in the first period and finished the match with a commanding 17-4 edge.

In the second game of the day, the Colonials got a slow start falling behind Wagner 4-2 after the first period. In the second period GW rallied, keyed by the team's defense which allowed only three more Wagner goals for the rest of the game. GW won,10-7, led by senior Kira Canon (Easthampton, MA/Williston Northampton) who scored six goals. Sophomore Amy Heinemann (North Miami Beach, FL/Krop) had a career-high 13 saves in the cage.

Versus No. 17 Brown, GW struggled offensively scoring only three goals in the game. Yet the Colonials trailed by only two, 5-3 going into the fourth and final period. However, Brown's defense proved to be too much while tacking on five more goals for a 8-3 final.

In the final game of the weekend, GW lost to the tournament host No. 19 Princeton Tigers. The first half was an offensive struggle for both teams ending in a 3-3 tie. Princeton would prevail by holding the Colonials scoreless in the second half while scoring 10 goals to win with a 13-3 final score.
