GW Women's Water Polo Concludes Competition at Bison Invite
Colonials Defeat Villanova, Fall to Marist on Final Day
Feb. 17, 2013
LEWISBURG, Pa. - The George Washington women's water polo team split a pair of games on the final day of competition at the Bison Invitational at Bucknell's Kinney Natatorium. The Colonials dropped a 10-6 decision to Marist before defeating Villanova, 11-6.
The Colonials (3-4) and Red Foxes traded the first four goals of the game until junior Rachael Bentley scored with 33 seconds left in the first quarter to give GW a 3-2 lead. Marist, however, held the Colonials off the scoreboard in the second while scoring three unanswered to take a 5-3 advantage at halftime.
The Red Foxes extended their run to 7-1 to up their lead to 9-4 with 3:46 to go in the third period before junior Megan Brolley ended a 5:29 scoreless drought for GW to make it 9-5 at the end of three, and each team scored once in the fourth to account for the 10-6 final score.
GW struggled offensively, making just 6-of-27 shots in the game. Bentley led the Colonials with two goals, and sophomore goalie Chandler Vilander recorded a season-high 11 saves.
The Colonials scored the first four goals of the game against Villanova and never looked back, as the Wildcats were never able to pull closer than four the rest of the way.
GW led 6-2 at halftime and extended its lead to 10-4 with 36 seconds left in the third quarter before a Villanova goal with 12 seconds left made it 10-5 at the end of three periods. Each team scored once in the fourth to provide for the final margin of 11-6 and give the Colonials their second win over the Wildcats in as many weekends following a 14-9 victory at the season-opening Princeton Invitational last Sunday.
Freshman Erin Donoghue led GW with three goals, her third hat trick of the season, while classmate Hannah Cox scored twice and Bentley tallied a goal and five assists. Vilander stopped seven shots in the cage.
GW converted on five man-up opportunities as well as a penalty shot in the game.
The Colonials return to action next weekend at the CWPA/MAAC Crossover hosted by Villanova. GW will again face the host Wildcats as well as Siena on Saturday before taking on Wagner and Iona on Sunday.
