Women's Water Polo Opens 2007 at Terps Invite

Feb. 19, 2007

COLLEGE PARK, MD - The George Washington women's water polo team opened the 2007 season at the Terrapin Invitational at the University of Maryland last weekend, falling to a trio of nationally-ranked programs and dropping a close contest in its tournament finale.

The Colonials struggled on offense in their season-opener against No. 14 Hartwick, managing just one goal over the final 16 minutes in a 16-3 loss. Senior Morgan Hooker, sophomore Amy Moren and rookie Marissa Stamler each scored for GW versus the Hawks, while junior Julie Jacoby stopped 12 shots.

In Saturday's second game, GW only trailed No. 20 Indiana by three goals at halftime (6-3), but surrendered a 5-0 run in the third period and fell 14-6 to the Hoosiers. Stamler registered her first career hat trick, followed by a goal apiece from Hooker, Moren and junior Rebecca Stein.

Stamler added two more goals in GW's 16-7 loss versus No. 13 Michigan in Sunday's opening game. The Colonials once again trailed by three at the half (7-4), but a 6-1 run by the Wolverines in the third period put the game out of reach.

GW saved its best play for its final game, building a 3-2 halftime lead against Marist before dropping a tight 6-5 decision to the Red Foxes. Jacoby made 10 saves in the game, but another third-period rally, this one a 3-1 run by Marist, sent the Colonials to 0-4 on the season.

GW plays another two-day, four-game tournament at the Bucknell Invitational in Lewisburg, PA, this Saturday, Feb. 24, and Sunday, Feb. 25.
