WASHINGTON - Scarlett Hallahan, Jacqueline Bywater and Erin McGeoy combined for six goals in their final home game Saturday, but George Washington women’s water polo came up short against No. 22 Princeton, 15-11, on Senior Day at Charles E. Smith Center Pool.

After trailing by as many as seven goals, the Colonials (5-4) battled back to within 13-10 on Grace Heck’s score with 4:36 remaining. They had a couple of chances to pull closer over the next two minutes but couldn’t convert before the Tigers (4-4) put the game out of reach with back-to-back goals.

Playing in front of a spirited crowd, GW managed to hang tough against a nationally ranked foe. The Colonials carried a 2-1 lead into the second period before Princeton ran off 10 of the next 12 goals. They mounted their late charge with a 5-1 run that started with Bywater’s goal with 1:49 left in the third quarter.

GW recognized its seven seniors – Hallahan, Bywater, McGeoy, Maggie Ball, Megan Belliveau, Maddie Goodell, and Maddy Johnson – in a pregame ceremony and then leaned on them to stoke the offense.

Hallahan had three goals and an assist, while Bywater found the net twice. McGeoy posted an impressive all-around stat line with a goal, an assist, two steals and an ejection drawn. Johnson pitched in an assist, too.

Freshmen accounted for GW’s other five goals with two apiece coming from Heck and Alana Ponce and the other via Dara Bleiberg.

UP NEXT: GW has a break next weekend before its annual West Coast trip. The Colonials are scheduled for four games in California, starting against Fresno Pacific on March 9 at Cal-Baptist's Lancer Invitational.
