PRINCETON, N.J. - The George Washington women's water polo team picked up a pair of convincing wins over Villanova and Siena on Saturday on the first day of the CWPA vs. MAAC Weekend at Princeton's DeNunzio Pool. The Colonials defeated Villanova, 11-5, before taking down Siena, 13-10.
At 4-1 on the season, GW is off to its best start in program history.
The Colonials and Wildcats were tied for much of the first half, but GW took the lead for good on a goal by Katherine Berry with 1:36 to go in the second quarter. The Colonials led 5-4 at halftime, then outscored Villanova 6-1 in the second half in the 11-5 victory.
"Our defense really took control," head coach Scott Reed said. "It was an outstanding defensive performance."
In their second game of the day, GW led Siena throughout, scoring the first goal at the 6:40 mark of the first period and never looking back. Eight of the Colonials' 13 goals were on power plays, as they were a perfect 8-for-8 with a man advantage.
The Colonials return to action on Sunday, when they take on Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opponents Wagner (10:45 a.m.) and Iona (3:15 p.m.)
