GW Wins Twice at Maryland Invitational

COLLEGE PARK, MD - The Colonials won both of their matches at the Maryland Invitational this weekend. GW knocked off the host Terrapins, 6-3, and Salem International, 18-8, on Saturday, Feb. 26 to improve to 5-5 overall and earn its first CWPA win this season.

Sophomore Morgan Hooker (Woodland Hills, CA/Harvard Westlake) scored six times in the two games. She notched two goals in GW's triumph against Maryland and four against Salem International.

Against the Terrapins, GW jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first period and led 3-1 at the half. The Colonials outscored Maryland 3-2 over the final to quarters to produce the winning margin. Junior goalie Amy Heinemann (N. Miami Beach, FL/Krop) recorded 10 saves in the contest to anchor GW's defense.

Hours later the Colonials returned to the water and routed Salem International, 18-8. GW owned an 11-4 lead at the half and never looked back. Freshman Erin Bailey (Ann Arbor, MI/Huron) also scored four times in the game for GW to along with Hooker's four scores. Freshman Faith Goss (Portola, Valley, CA/Menlo School) added three goals. Sophomore Kaitlin Buttler-Ricketts (East Granby, CT/Loomis Chaffee) made 10 saves in the cage.

The Colonials also played an exhibition match against Navy Aquatic Club on Friday, February 25, and lost 14-10. Hooker again led the way for the Colonials with three tallies.

GW will host Maryland to kick off CWPA conference play on Tuesday, March 8 at 7:00 p.m. at the Smith Center pool.
