WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington women's water polo team opened CWPA league play with a narrow 7-6 loss against Maryland at Charles E. Smith Athletic Center Pool on Thursday night.

Freshman Bernadette Karandy scored two goals, but GW (1-8, 0-1 CWPA Southern Div.) couldn't overcome a two-goal first period deficit in the defeat. The Colonials trailed 2-0 after the opening eight minutes, 4-2 at halftime and 6-5 after the third quarter before eventually dropping the league decision to the Terrapins.

GW also received goals from senior co-captains Morgan Hooker and Jenna Burnett, as well as rookies Tara Sullivan and Danielle Mayer. Junior goalkeeper Julie Jacoby made eight saves, bringing her season total to 92.

The Colonials travel to Philadelphia, PA, and Villanova University to play three games this weekend, March 3. GW will face Queens (NY) at 11:30 am, Siena at 1:30 pm and the host Wildcats at 5:00 pm.
