Women's Water Polo Places Sixth at ECAC Championship

LEWISBURG, PA - The George Washington women's water polo team defeated Grove City College, 7-4, Saturday, but suffered two losses by a combined three goals and finished in sixth place at the ECAC Championship hosted by Bucknell this weekend.
GW, which entered the tournament as the No. 6 seed, fell to third-seeded Harvard, 8-7, in overtime in its opening game on Saturday. The Colonials held a one-goal lead in the fourth quarter, but the Crimson managed to tie the score at 7-7 to force overtime and eventually netted the game-winning goal with one second to play in the first extra period. GW went into a man-up situation in the final seconds, but couldn't convert a shot attempt.
Senior goalkeeper Julie Jacoby matched her own school record with 22 saves, including a penalty block. Seniors Rebecca Stein and Greta Pedraza led the offense with two goals apiece.
GW (4-8) got its fourth win of the season with a 7-4 victory over Grove City in Saturday's late game. The Colonials led throughout and didn't allow more than a goal in any quarter to move into Sunday's fifth-place game. Sophomores Tara Sullivan, Bernadette Karandy and Marissa Stamler each scored two goals, while rookie Charlotte Schou registered seven saves over the final three quarters. Jacoby had three saves in one quarter of play.
Stein and Sullivan each had two goals Sunday, but GW couldn't contain Mercyhurst's Rachel Griepsma in an 8-6 loss to the Lakers in the fifth-place game. Griepsma scored six goals as the Colonials fourth-quarter rally from a three-goal deficit failed.
