Colonials Take on Bucknell, Mercyhurst on Sunday
March 2, 2013
ERIE, Pa. - The George Washington water polo team dropped its CWPA Southern Division opener, falling to Brown, 15-12, at the Mercyhurst North East Aquatic Center.
Brown took a 3-1 lead after the first quarter, but GW (6-6) outscored the Bears, 6-4, in the second to force a 7-7 tie at the break. Brown pulled ahead, 10-8, at the end of the third period, and while the Colonials were able to cut their deficit to just one with 5:28 remaining in the fourth quarter, the Bears scored four of the final six goals of the game for the 15-12 win.
Freshman Hannah Cox, the reigning Southern Division Rookie of the Week, tallied four goals - her fifth straight game with at least four goals. Freshman Erin Donoghue and junior Megan Brolley each scored twice, and sophomore Meagan Moreland recorded four assists and three steals. Sophomore goalkeeper Chandler Vilander stopped nine shots in the cage.
The Colonials struggled with foul trouble, as they were ejected 15 times in the game and had three starters foul out. On the other side of the ball, GW was just 1-for-10 in power play opportunities.
