WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington raced out to a 9-3 lead by halftime over visiting Salem International and limited the Tigers to just one second-half goal as the Colonials won 17-4.
GW (2-2) took a quick 2-0 lead after the first period behind goals from senior Michelle Cuozzo and junior Kira Canon. The Colonials used a balanced attack in the second period, scoring seven goals from five different players, as SIU never got closer than the four-goal deficit at half, 9-3.
The Colonials blew the match open in the third period, scoring six unanswered goals and held the Tigers to just one score in the fourth period. Sophomore Kendra Shanley exploded in the second half for four goals, notching a team-high five for the match.
The Colonials honored their five seniors before the match, Pyka, Cuozzo, Jessica Hess, Kiersten Johnson and Juli Marhefka.
