Women's Water Polo Posts 3-1 Weekend Record at Claremont College Invite
Colonials Place Second in Field of 12 Teams
POMONA, CA (March 5. 2002) - The women's water polo team made the most of their California swing, taking three of four matches at the Claremont College Invite.
The Colonials (7-3) began their weekend on the right foot with a 7-3 victory over San Bernadino. Sophomore Kira Canon led GW with three goals on the day. The Colonials were opportunistic, scoring five of their seven goals off penalty shots and man advantages. Collegiate Water Polo Player of the Week, senior goalkeeper Lisa Greenfield notched nine saves in the winning effort.
GW faced Arizona State University in their next match, besting the Sun Devils 8-4. Cannon again scored three goals to lead the Colonials, who were able to convert six goals off penalty shots and man advantages. ASU never led in the match, as GW dominated play.
The Colonials exploded for six first period goals, taking an early 6-1 advantage versus Occidental College. However, this lead would not last and the Tigers closed down GW's offensive production, limiting them to just two more goals in the first half, and shutting them out in the second half. Occidental rallied to tie the match at 8-8 in the fourth period and send the game to overtime. Two quick goals by Canon and Sophomore Vanessa Fravel sealed the match, and gave the Colonials their third victory of the weekend.
GW was unable to execute on the offensive end in their final match of the Invite against Pomona-Pitzer, and scored only three goals through three periods, leaving them in a 7-3 hole in the final quarter. The Colonials would outscore the Sagehens in the final period, but could not muster a final rally, falling 8-5.
The Colonials return to action this weekend, when they host three CWPA rivals, Princeton, Bucknell and Villanova on Saturday, March 9, beginning at 9:30 a.m. at Smith Center.
