Women's Water Polo Goes Undefeated at Bucknell Invitational

WASHINGTON, DC (Feb. 24, 2002) - George Washington women's water polo team got on the winning track with a three-match sweep this past weekend at the Bucknell Invitational.
GW (4-2) faced Slippery Rock University on Saturday, Feb. 23 in a 4:00 p.m. match. The Colonials were led by sophomore Kira Canon, who scored four goals in the winning effort. GW took converted 4-10 man-up advantages, including three in the third quarter. The Colonials held off a late charge by the Rockets, and won 8-7.
In their 8:00 p.m. match, GW faced host Bucknell, and jumped ahead 2-0 in the first two quarters behind goals by Canon and sophomore Vanessa Fravel. A three-goal output in the third quarter put the match away, as the Colonials cruised to a 6-3 victory. Freshman Kendra Shanley led the Colonials with two goals, while junior Juli Marhefka recorded three assists.
On Sunday, GW took on Slippery Rock in a rematch of their earlier contest. The Colonials against capitalized on the Rockets mistakes, and converted 5-8 man-up chances. After the Colonials led 3-0 at the half, Slippery Rock clawed they're way back into the match, outscoring GW 5-3 in the third quarter to pull within one goal, 6-5. The Colonials again buckled down on defense, holding the Rockets to just one more score, and added two scores of their own to complete the three-match sweep, 8-6. Junior Ashley Pyka and Canon led GW with two goals apiece, with Canon adding three assists for the match.
The Colonials return to action when they travel to California to compete in the Claremont College Invite on Saturday and Sunday, March 2-3.
