Maryland Sinks Women's Water Polo, 9-4, in Home Opener

March 8, 2006

WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington University junior co-captain Morgan Hooker (Woodland Hills, CA) scored her team-leading 23rd and 24th goals of the season against Maryland Tuesday night in the Colonials home opener at Smith Center pool, but it wasn't enough as the Terps scored four times in the third quarter to pull away from GW and claim a 9-4 victory. Sophomores Kathryn Shehan (Chicago, IL) and Erin Bailey (Ann Arbor, MI) also scored to lead GW offensively.

Maryland jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the contest, scoring two of its three first quarter goals on man-advantage opportunities. But, the Colonials roared back in the second with three goals of their own to tie the score at 3-3 heading into halftime.

In the decisive third period, the Terrapins quickly took a 4-3 lead but Bailey answered back to equal the score at 4-4. Unfortunately, Bailey's goal would be the Colonials' last and the Terps scored three more times in the third and twice more in the fourth quarter to seal the 9-4 win. Maryland's defensive effort led to its offensive spurt in the second half forcing GW to turn the ball over leading to five unanswered goals.

The Colonials (4-8) are back in action when they travel to Villanova, PA, on Wednesday, March 15, to take on the Wildcats at 7 p.m.
