Women's Water Polo Drops Two Close Matches at Lancer Invite

March 15, 2003

RIVERSIDE, CA - The Colonials lost two closely-contested matches on the first day at the Lancer Invite in Riverside, CA at California Baptist University, dropping a pair of one-goal losses.

GW (4-6) played in a defensive battle with No. 18 Arizona State, as the two teams netted an combined five goals for the match. The Colonials rallied to tie the match at 2-2 after trailing by two scores after the first quarter. However, ASU answered GW with a score in the fourth period to edge the Colonials 3-2. Vanessa Fravel and Kiersten Johnson accounted for GW's two goals.

The Colonials led Pomona Pitzer for most of the match, taking a 6-5 lead into the final quarter. Fravel had another solid outing, scoring three of GW's six goals. Pomona would respond in the final period, notching two goals to take the lead, 7-6. Fravel nearly tied the match with five seconds remaining, but her last-ditch effort was blocked.

The Colonials face the University of Redlands and Cal State Bakersfield tomorrow in the second day of the invitational.
