THOUSAND OAKS, CA - The George Washington women's water polo team hung with Cal Lutheran for 24 minutes, but a 6-2 run by the Regals in the third quarter sent the Colonials to a 12-8 defeat in their first game of Spring Break in California on Wednesday.
GW (4-10) and Cal Lutheran, the third-ranked team in Division III, both scored two goals in the first, second and fourth quarters, but the Regals dominated the third period, outscoring the Colonials 6-2 to pull away for the victory.
Senior co-captain Morgan Hooker led the attack with a hat trick and is now 19 goals shy of surpassing Kira Canon as the program's all-time leading goal scorer. Junior Sarah Stimson scored twice, while junior Greta Pedraza and freshmen Danielle Mayer and Marissa Stamler tallied once. Junior goalkeeper Julie Jacoby made six stops in the loss.
GW will play three games at California Baptist on Thursday. The Colonials open with Macalester at 9:05 am PDT, then face Occidental at 11:15 am and wrap up with the host Lancers at 3:30 pm.
