Delker Provides Women's Water Polo Game Winner Over Sonoma State
March 16, 2011
ROHNERT PARK, CA - With the California sun quickly setting, senior Erin Delker scored with 46 seconds remaining in overtime to lift the George Washington women's water polo team to a 10-9 win over host Sonoma State at Rudloff Pool Tuesday night. The Colonials opened their annual West Coast swing with a 13-10 loss to Cal State Monterey Bay Tuesday afternoon. GW led the contest, which was played through a steady northern California rain, by a goal, 6-5, at halftime, but fell behind 10-8 after three quarters. The Colonials closed within a goal in the fourth quarter, but the Otters pulled away with three of the game's final four goals. Juniors Allison Peotter and Megan Walker both provided hat tricks, with Peotter supplying three ejections drawn and two assists. Junior Monica Hanson also finished with five points on two goals and three assists, while freshman Rachael Bentley added two goals and Delker chipped in two assists. Senior goalkeeper Charlotte Schou made seven saves. In Tuesday's late game that began at 6:30 pm PT, GW never led by more than a goal, but managed to not allow Sonoma State to take the lead in a back-and-forth battle than came down to both team's final possession in dimly lit Rudloff Pool. Delker converted from long range from the wing with 46 seconds left, the Colonials stopped the Seawolves on their final possession and ran off the waning seconds to snap a five-game losing skid. Peotter again led the offense with a hat trick along with four steals and two assists. Hanson and Bentley netted two goals apiece, Walker pitched in a goal and two assists and senior Melissa Sesana rounded out the scoring with a goal. Schou posted 10 saves for her third win of the season.
