GW Women's Water Polo Splits on Final Day of Lancer Invite
March 16, 2013
REDLANDS, Calif. - The George Washington women's water polo team concluded its Spring Break trip by splitting a pair of games at the Lancer Invite, co-hosted by California Baptist and University of Redlands, on Saturday. The Colonials fell to Redlands, 10-5, before defeating La Verne, 11-7.
GW (11-11) led host Redlands, 2-1, after one quarter, and the game was tied, 3-3, at halftime. The Bulldogs, who are ranked fourth in Division III, took control with a 3-1 third quarter, then outscored the Colonials, 4-1, in the fourth for the 10-5 win. GW was just 3-for-8 on man-up opportunities in the game.
GW jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first quarter against La Verne, which is ranked eighth in Division III, but the Leopards used a 3-1 second quarter to pull within one, 5-4, at halftime. The Colonials, however, clamped down on defense in the third quarter and used a strong transition game to outscore La Verne, 5-1, in the period for the 11-7 victory.
Freshman Hannah Cox and sophomore Meagan Moreland each notched hat tricks to lead GW offensively, and Vilander recorded nine saves in goal. The Colonials converted on 2-of-4 power play opportunities in the game.
"I'm proud of the way we were able to finish the weekend," said head coach Scott Reed. "We played some very physical games this week, and it was definitely a test of our mentality, but we were able to power through at the end and show some good GW pride. I'm very pleased with how we ended."
After posting a 3-4 record on their seven-game, four-day West Coast swing, the Colonials return to action on Saturday, when they host Villanova at 4 p.m. at the Charles E. Smith Center Pool.
