Women's Water Polo Splits in Final Day at Lancer Invite

March 17, 2003

RIVERSIDE, CA - George Washington battled to a 1-1 record on the day at the Lancer Invite, losing and winning by slim one-goal margins.

GW (5-7) put forth a stellar defensive effort versus Cal State Bakersfield, limiting them to just four goals for the match. However, the Colonials couldn't produce on the offensive side of the ball, falling 4-3. Kira Canon, Vanessa Fravel and Elissabeth Schweitzer each scored for GW, while Amy Heinemann made nine saves.

The Colonials staged an outstanding comeback in their second match of the day, rallying from a two-goal deficit in the final quarter to score the last three goals over the final 3:44 to seize the 7-6 victory. Canon fourth goal of the match tied the game with 1:09 remaining in the game, and then notched her fifth score with 25 seconds remaining to give GW the win. Schweitzer and Bastani added a goal apiece in the winning effort.
