ORANGE, Calif. - Sophomore Rachael Bentley totaled eight goals as the George Washington women's water polo team ended its West Coast trip with a pair of wins on Saturday, defeating Redlands, 10-9, and Chapman, 13-8.
After GW (7-8) jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first game of the day, Division III No. 3 ranked Redlands sliced its deficit in half with a goal late in the first quarter. However, the Colonials exploded for five goals late in the second period to take a 7-4 advantage at halftime.
The Bulldogs kept it close in the second half, but GW junior Jessie Hurd tallied the game-winner with 3:12 to go in the fourth quarter.
Senior Megan Walker and sophomore Rachael Bentley led the Colonials with three goals apiece, and Walker added two ejections drawn, while senior Monica Hanson contributed three assists. Freshman goalie Chandler Vilander recorded seven saves.
In the second game of the day, GW again scored the first two goals of the game and never looked back. The Colonials led, 4-2, after the first quarter and 7-4 at halftime. D-III No. 6 Chapman pulled within one, 8-7, with 4:21 remaining in the third quarter, but GW outscored the Panthers, 5-1, the rest of the way.
Bentley led the Colonials with five goals, including the first three of the game, while sophomore Katherine Berry scored four times and Hanson and sophomore Megan Brolley each tallied twice. Vilander again stopped seven shots in goal, including a key penalty block in the fourth quarter, and added two assists.
