HAYWARD, CA - The George Washington women's water polo team not only battled a formidable opponent, but the elements as well, in an 18-9 loss to Cal State East Bay at Pioneer Pool Friday. Torrential rain, hail and even a tornado warning affected the outdoor action in the Colonials' third game of their annual West Coast swing.

The competition gets no easier for GW (3-9), which will face 16th-ranked UC Davis and 2nd-ranked California at the Golden Bear Invitational in Berkeley, CA, Sunday to cap its five-game West Coast trip. The No. 2 Golden Bears are the highest ranked opponent in Colonials' program history.

Cal State East Bay (14-7), which received a vote in this week's CWPA Varsity Top 20, got seven goals from Claire Pierce and scored the first 10 goals of the game to post its fourth straight victory.

GW didn't score until 43 seconds remained in the first half and trailed 11-1 at halftime. Freshman Rachael Bentley scored all three of her goals in the third quarter, but the Colonials would get no closer than seven, 12-5, after the Pioneers' red-hot start.

Junior Allison Peotter followed Bentley's hat trick with two goals, while junior Monica Hanson, sophomore Jessie Hurd and rookies Allison Littlejohn and Megan Brolley added goals.

Senior goalkeeper Charlotte Schou made four saves and allowed 15 goals in three quarters. Junior Antonia Raris had two saves and three goals allowed in the final eight minutes.

GW opens the Golden Bear Invite against the Aggies at 12:00 pm ET Sunday, before taking on the host Golden Bears at 4:30 pm ET.
