CLAREMONT, CA - Senior Morgan Hooker scored four goals and junior goalkeeper Julie Jacoby posted 15 saves as the George Washington women's water polo team defeated Whittier 10-9 on the final day of competition of the Claremont Colleges Tournament in Claremont, CA, on Sunday.
GW finished with a 1-3 record in the two-day, four-game event on Saturday and Sunday. The Colonials dropped contests to host institutions Pomona-Pitzer, 8-5, and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 11-5, on Saturday and fell to Redlands 9-7 in their finale on Sunday. GW finished its annual California Spring Break trip with a 2-6 mark.
GW led throughout against Whittier, steadily increasing its lead to four goals, at 8-4, after three quarters. Whittier rallied in the fourth period, however, and managed to tie the game. Hooker netted the game-winner late in the quarter to help the Colonials secure their sixth win of the season. Senior co-captain Jenna Burnett added three goals in the victory.
On Saturday, GW squandered a 4-0 first-quarter and 5-4 halftime lead in a 8-5 loss against Pomona-Pitzer. Sophomore Greta Pedraza led the offense with three goals, while Jacoby made 13 blocks. Pedraza led the Colonials in Saturday's late game, scoring two goals in an 11-5 defeat at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
In Sunday's finale, GW outscored Redlands 4-2 in the fourth quarter, but couldn't overcome a four-goal third-quarter deficit in a 9-7 loss. Hooker and Pedraza each scored two goals, with Jacoby making nine stops. The Colonials converted just 1-of-8 man-up opportunitites and failed to convert on two penalty shots.
