Women's Water Polo Falls to No. 16 UC Davis, No. 2 California
March 20, 2011
BERKELEY, CA - Junior Allison Peotter scored a season-high six goals against No. 16 UC Davis and added another against No. 2 California, but the Colonials dropped both decisions against their nationally ranked opponents at the Golden Bear Invitational Sunday.
GW (3-11) lost to UC Davis, 17-8, before falling to Cal, 16-4, in its final game of its annual West Coast trip. The second-ranked Golden Bears are the highest ranked opponent in Colonials' program history.
In Sunday's opener against the Aggies, Peotter opened the scoring 1:31 into the game and added a second goal in opening quarter to help the Colonials stay close to trail 4-2. However, UC Davis scored five unanswered goals in the second quarter and netted two goals in the third quarter for a 7-0 to take an 11-2 lead. GW would get as close as seven twice in the fourth quarter, but a late 3-0 UC Davis run ended any chance at a rally.
No. 2 Cal (19-3) scored the game's first nine goals and kept GW without a goal until 7:33 remained in the third quarter to cruise to the victory. The Colonials outscored the Golden Bears, 3-2, in the third quarter behind goals from Berry, Peotter and Walker, but were outgunned, 5-1, over the final eight minutes.
Freshman Allison Littlejohn provided GW's fourth-quarter goal to round out the scoring. Schou totaled seven saves as the Colonials lost their third straight game and sixth against a nationally ranked foe this season.
Peotter went over 100 career goals during GW's five-game West Coast trip and now has 108 goals in 65 career games.
GW (3-11, 0-1 CWPA Southern Division) returns to the East Coast to host a round-robin invitational at Charles E. Smith Center Pool next weekend.
