Women's Water Polo Sweeps Competition at Villanova Invite
WASHINGTON, DC (March 25, 2002) - Women's water polo notched three victories over Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) opponents this past weekend, with wins over Iona, Queens and Slippery Rock.
Strong defense marked a weekend that saw the Colonials (12-4, 5-1) only allow 11 goals over three matches, limiting their opponents to less than four goals a game. In contrast, GW's offense scored an average of over 10 goals a game.
Versus Iona the Colonials held the Gaels to a four scores, and sprinted out to a 4-1 lead after one period. GW extended their lead to 5-2 at the half, adding three more scores for the final tally, 8-4. Senior goalkeeper Lisa Greenfield made eight saves and sophomore Kira Canon scored three goals to lead the Colonials.
GW picked up where they left off in the second match of the day, getting an early 5-2 lead over Queens after one period, and holding the Royals to only one more score in the fourth period to win 11-3. Junior Ashley Pika scored four goals in the winning effort and Lisa Greenfield added four saves.
The Colonials closed out the day with a 12-4 victory over Slippery Rock. Sophomore Mia Fabian scored four goals and Pyka added three, as the Colonials held the Rockets scoreless in the first half, building a 6-0 lead by the break. Greenfield notched 13 saves to lead a strong defensive effort by the Colonials.
