March 25, 2004
WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington women's water polo seniors Kira Canon, Vanessa Fravel and Elisabeth Schweitzer played their final GW home game Wednesday night and each scored multiple goals as the Colonials handed visiting Maryland a 16-4 loss at Smith Center pool. The victory completed a regular-season sweep of the Terrapins who are competing in their first season as a varsity program.
Unlike the first game, an 8-1 GW victory on Mar. 3 in College Park, GW stormed out of the gates Wednesday scoring on a Kendra Shanley counterattack goal just 18 seconds into the game. The Colonials continued the pressure scoring four more unanswered goals to take a 5-0 lead after the first period. Maryland scored its first goal at the 3:01 mark of the second period. GW continued the pressure and went on to win the game, 16-4. GW's seniors accounted for 10 of the Colonials' 16 goals. Canon scored a team-high five goals to go with a pair of goals from Fravel and three from Schweitzer.
GW's next match takes place Saturday, Mar. 27, when it plays Villanova in a 5:30 p.m. game at CWPA League Weekend at Princeton, NJ. The Colonials also play Bucknell Sunday at 10:40 a.m. and host Princeton at 2:50 p.m. Sunday in New Jersey.
