Stamler, Sullivan Lift Women's Water Polo to 10-8 Win at 'Nova
March 27, 2009
VILLANOVA, PA - Juniors Marissa Stamler and Tara Sullivan combined for seven goals to lead the George Washington women's water polo team to a 10-8 victory at Villanova Friday evening. Stamler netted four goals and Sullivan added three as GW (5-15) won its second straight game, its first back-to-back victories since mid-March last season. The Colonials scored on their first possession, but the Wildcats rattled off three consecutive goals to lead 3-1 after a quarter. GW responded with three unanswered strikes during the second period and grabbed a 5-4 lead before heading into intermission tied, 5-5. The Colonials broke open the tight contest with a 3-0 third quarter for an 8-5 edge heading into the final eight minutes and held on for the two-goal margin. Freshman Allison Peotter was held without a goal for the first time in 16 games, but pitched in five assists and four steals to aid GW. Peotter now has 26 assists this season, the sixth highest single-season total in program history. She also has 56 steals, the fourth-most in one season, and will break the single-season mark for swim-offs won. Senior Luciana Maggiolo, junior Sarah Fitch and rookie Megan Walker also added goals against the Wildcats, while sophomore goalkeeper Charlotte Schou made nine saves in the victory, upping her season total to 207, the fourth-most stops in one season in school history. GW will face Iona in Villanova, PA, at 9:00 am Saturday morning before traveling to Princeton for a CWPA Southern Division contest at 4:30 pm.
