Women's Water Polo Wins Three at Villanova

March 31, 2003

VILLANOVA, PA - George Washington took three of four Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) matches over the weekend, topping Bucknell, Salem and host Villanova while falling in a close contest to Princeton.

GW (13-9) battled to an 8-7 victory over Bucknell in their first match of the weekend, as Kira Canon scored five goals to lead the Colonials who raced out to a 3-0 lead and never looked back. The Bison had a chance to tie the match in the third quarter, but a key block by goalkeeper Amy Heinemann preserved GW's lead.

The Colonials fell to a strong Princeton team in their second match, allowing the Tigers to build an 8-2 halftime lead. GW would rally to outscore Princeton 8-6 in the second half, but fell short losing 14-10. Kiersten Johnson led GW with three goals in the losing effort.

GW rebounded with a strong performance against host Villanova. The Colonials jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first quarter and never relinquished the lead. Canon scored five goals for the second match of the weekend, and GW won easily, 8-4.

The Colonials notched their third win of the weekend, cruising to a 9-3 victory over Salem. GW scored nine goals in the first two periods against the short-handed Tigers who lost a player to penalties in the second quarter. Coach Reed pulled a player from the pool to make the remainder of the match even, and ran a more conservative game plan for the balance of the contest. Canon led with three scores to push her total to 15 goals on the weekend.
