Women's Water Polo Ends Regular Season With Two Losses

April 4, 2009

LEWISBURG, PA - The George Washington women's water polo team wrapped its 2009 regular season Saturday with a pair of losses at Bucknell University, falling to the host Bison, 13-9, in CWPA Southern Division action before losing 12-6 to 19th-ranked Indiana.

GW (5-20, 0-6 CWPA Southern Division) will face either Maryland or Bucknell in the opening game of the Southern Division Championship at Maryland's Eppley Recreation Center Saturday, April 18, at 10:00 am.

The Colonials hung with the league-leading Bison for a half, but a late second-quarter goal gave the hosts a 7-6 advantage at the half. Bucknell netted the first two goals of the third quarter, GW got back to within 9-7, but could not get any closer in the four-goal defeat.

Junior Sarah Fitch and freshman Megan Walker had two goals apiece, followed by a goal each from seniors Luciana Maggiolo and Amy Moren, juniors Emily Chereson and Marissa Stamler and rookie Allison Peotter. Sophomore Charlotte Schou finished with 10 saves.

In Saturday's late game, the Colonials trailed by scores of 3-1, 6-2 and 9-3 through the first three quarters en route to the 12-6 loss to the nationally ranked Hoosiers. Walker and Moren scored two goals, while Chereson and junior Tara Sullivan added goals. Schou had eight saves and freshman Antonia Raris chipped in three stops.

Peotter's two assists on the day increased her season total to 31, the third-most in a single-season in program history.
