WASHINGTON, DC (April 8, 2002) - Women's water polo capped off another successful weekend campaign, winning two of three matches in Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) competition this past weekend in Lewisberg, PA.

The Colonials (14-5, 7-2 CWPA) started the weekend off on the right note, topping host Bucknell University 9-8, on Friday, April 5, in an evening match. GW and BU battled to a 3-3 halftime tie as both teams were unable to get a clear advantage.

The Colonials took the early lead in the third period, as junior driver Juli Marhefka scored her first of two goals in the quarter. The Bison would strike back with two scores of their own to take the lead, 5-4. Junior Kiersten Johnson would knot the match at five goals apiece with 1:02 left in the period, and Marhefka would net her second score with just six seconds remaining to give the Colonials a 7-6 lead. Marhefka's score would prove to be the game-winner, as GW and BU scored two goals each in the final period.

The Colonials faced No. 13 Princeton in their second match of the weekend on Saturday, April 6. Sophomore Vanessa Fravel's three goals would not be enough to top the Tigers, who edged GW 11-8 in a highly competitive game. The Colonials took an early edge over Princeton, leading 3-2, after the first quarter, and extending that lead to 4-2, halfway through the second period. The Tigers turned up the pressure and scored four unanswered goals in the last three and a half minutes of the second quarter to a take a 6-4 halftime lead.

Princeton continued their torrid pace in the second half, scoring two more goals to take a game-high four-goal lead, 8-4 at 2:18 in the third quarter. GW would get back on the board behind a score by Fravel to cut the Tigers' lead to 8-5 after three periods. GW would narrow the gap to just two scores, 9-7, after freshman Kendra Shanley netted a goal with 2:34 left in the game. However, the Colonials were unable to get any closer, and lost the match, 11-8.

In their final match of the weekend, the Colonials bounced back to beat Villanova 12-8. Junior Ashley Pyka scored five goals and sophomore Mia Fabian scored four goals, as GW never trailed versus the Wildcats. The Colonials jumped out to a 5-3 lead after the first quarter behind two scored by Fravel. Pyka was a model of consistency, scoring once in each of the first three quarters and twice in the fourth to lead the Colonials.

GW returns to action when they travel to Villanova to compete in the Southern Championships from April 19-21.
