Women's Water Polo Drops Home Contests Against Bucknell, No. 19 Princeton

April 10, 2006

WASHINGTON, DC - Playing its final two home games of the regular season this past weekend, the George Washington University women's water polo team fell 9-7 to Bucknell on Saturday and suffered a 12-7 setback to 19th-ranked Princeton on Sunday at Smith Center Pool. Sophomore Greta Pedraza (Miami, FL) and freshman Amy Moren (Burbank, CA) each scored three goals in the two games to lead the Colonials offensively.

Against the Bison on Saturday, GW started out slow defensively and Bucknell took advantage taking a 6-2 lead at halftime. Bucknell increased its lead, outscoring the Colonials 3-1 in the third quarter, until GW finally settled in on both sides of the ball in the final period. The Colonials put up four goals in the fourth, while shutting out the Bison, but the lead was too great to overcome.

Moren and Hooker each scored twice to lead GW's offensive attack, while senior co-captain Amy Heinemann (N. Miami Beach, FL) and sophomore Julie Jacoby (Coral Gables, FL) combined to record five saves in goal.

On Sunday against the Tigers, Heinemann, the Colonials' lone senior on the squad, was playing in her final home game. She recorded four saves in net, but the Tigers overwhelmed GW with five goals in the second quarter which proved to be the difference.

Both teams came out firing in the first period as each scored three goals. Princeton pulled away in the second though, putting up five goals to the Colonials' one to take a commanding 8-4 lead at intermission. The Tigers added four more goals over the final two quarters, but were outscored 2-1 in the fourth, leaving the final margin at 12-7.

Jacoby made three stops in net, while Pedraza and junior Jenna Burnett (Lake Forest, CA) each notched two goals apiece.

The Colonials (10-13, 0-5 CWPA) return to action when they travel to Princeton, NJ, for the CWPA Southern Championship, April 22-23, hosted by the Princeton Tigers. The top four teams at the Southern Championship automatically qualify for the CWPA Eastern Championship, April 29-30, in Providence, RI.
