Women's Water Polo Wins First Match At Southern Championships, 19-4

April 11, 2003

LEWISBURG, PA - George Washington opened the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Southern Division Championships with a convincing 19-4 victory over Washington & Jefferson at Bucknell University.

The Colonials (14-9) never trailed in the match, jumping out to a 5-0 lead after the first quarter. Balanced scoring from the offense helped GW build a 9-2 lead by half, as seven different players found the back of the net through two quarters.

The Colonials started the second half the same way they began the first, scoring five unanswered goals to extend the lead to 14-2 with one quarter remaining. Five additional scores in the final quarter gave GW the 19-4 victory.

Vanessa Fravel led all scorers with four goals and Elizabeth Schweitzer and Kendra Shanley netted three goals apiece as the Colonials were firing on all cylinders versus the Presidents. In addition to Fravel, Schweitzer and Shanley, six other Colonials scored in the winning effort.

GW faces host Bucknell in their second match of the Championship in a 6:15 p.m. match.
