GW Women's Water Polo Drops Two at Southern Division Championship

Sophomore Katherine Berry had four goals and nine steals on Saturday.

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The fifth-seeded George Washington women's water polo team dropped a pair of matches in bracket play at the Southern Division Championship on Saturday at Bucknell's Kinney Natatorium. The Colonials fell to top seed and 14th-ranked Princeton, 11-8, in the first game of the day before falling to the fourth-seeded host Bison, 17-8.

GW (9-14) will take on No. 6 seed Mercyhurst on Sunday at 9 a.m. in the fifth-place game.

The Colonials scored the first goal of the game against Princeton as senior Megan Walker found the back of the cage on a backhand shot. But the Tigers answered with five unanswered to take a 5-1 halftime lead.

The 3-0 second quarter proved to be the difference in the game, as GW outscored Princeton, 7-6, in the second half.

Sophomore Katherine Berry led the Colonials with four goals and four steals while freshman goalie Chandler Vilander recorded six saves.

In the second game of the day, Bucknell jumped out to a 7-1 lead, and GW was never able to recover, trailing 11-4 at halftime and 16-6 after three quarters before falling 17-8.

Walker paced the Colonials' offense with three goals, while sophomores Megan Brolley and Rachael Bentley each had two. Berry played strong defensively, recording another five saves.
