VILLANOVA, PA - The George Washington University Colonials placed second at Southern Regional Championships this past weekend, April 17 and 18, to secure an automatic bid to the Eastern Conference Championships.

In the first match of the weekend the Colonials faced off against the 3rd seeded Bucknell Bison. The game was a defensive battle as the scoring opportunities were limited, but GW was able to get on the board with 2 scores in the first period to Bucknell's 1. In the second, Bucknell increased the defensive pressure and didn't allow the Colonials to score. Bucknell tied the game at 2 going into the halftime break. GW exploded for four goals in the third period to take a 6-3 lead into the final period. In the fourth, Bucknell put on the pressure and limited GW to only 1 more goal while the Bison got their offense going and scored three goals. GW was able to keep Bucknell scoreless for the rest of the game and won their opener 7-6. Senior Kira Canon scored a team high 3 goals while freshman Morgan Hooker tallied 2.

In the evening match, GW faced the Villanova Wildcats. Villanova started off fast taking a 2-1 lead after the first period. That would change as the Colonials defense shut down the Wildcats and limited them to only one goal over the next two periods, while GW scored seven goals to take a 8-3 lead into the fourth. The Colonials continued to put the ball in the net and scored three more times to take a commanding 11-3 lead. Villanova scored three more times but fell short as GW advanced to the final with an 11-6 victory. Freshman Morgan Hooker had a breakout game scoring a career high five goals while senior Kira Canon had her second hat trick in as many games.

In the championship game, the Colonials focused on their defensive effort against the 17th ranked Princeton Tigers. In the first period, both teams played suffocating defense with each team only allowing one goal a piece. In the second, both teams started coming alive on the offensive end. Princeton struck first scoring three goals to take a 4-1 lead. GW didn't back down and rallied to score two goals of their own ending the first half down 4-3. In the third, both teams continued to put on the offensive pressure with Princeton taking a 7-5 lead into the fourth. GW stpped up the defense and held Princeton scoreless for the entire fourth period. GW brought the game to within one on a Vanessa Fravel goal, but were unable to tally the equalizer as the Colonials fell 7-6.

With a second place finish, GW secured an automatic bid to the CWPA Eastern Water Polo Championships at Bucknell University starting on Friday, April 23.
