Women's Water Polo Season Ends at CWPA Southern Championship

April 20, 2008

LEWISBURG, PA - The George Washington women's water polo team fell to top-seeded Bucknell, 13-4, and third-seeded Maryland, 10-3, to wrap its 2008 season at the CWPA Southern Division Championship in Lewisburg, PA, Saturday.

GW, which finishes the season at 7-21 overall, fell behind 5-0 after the first quarter against the host Bison. Senior Sarah Stimson and sophomore Marissa Stamler each scored in the second quarter, but the Colonials couldn't move any closer and trailed 7-2 at halftime.

Sophomore Bernadette Karandy pulled GW to within 7-3 just 39 seconds into the third quarter, but Bucknell ran off five unanswered goals to close the period and eventually won the game 13-4. Sophomore Danielle Mayer added GW's fourth goal in the final period.

In the third-place game, GW fell behind Maryland 3-0 early, but junior Amy Moren managed to get the Colonials within 3-1 with 3:46 left in the first half. The Terrapins tallied four consecutive goals spanning the third and fourth quarters to pull away. Seniors Rebecca Stein and Greta Pedraza both scored in the fourth quarter, but couldn't counter the Tiger's five goals in the final eight minutes in the 10-3 loss.

Senior goalkeeper Julie Jacoby wrapped her four-year career as GW's career leader in blocks.
