Women's Water Polo's Season Comes to an End at CWPA Southern Championship

April 24, 2006

PRINCETON, NJ - The George Washington University women's water polo team saw its 2006 season come to a close on Saturday, April 22, as it dropped both of its matches at the CWPA Southern Championship at Princeton's DeNunzio Pool. The Colonials fell to top-seeded Princeton, 12-6, in their first game, followed by a 10-3 defeat in their second game against second-seeded Bucknell.

Against Princeton, who also ranks 20th nationally, the fourth-seeded Colonials fell behind early as the Tigers jumped out to a 5-1 lead after the first quarter and never looked back. Princeton would outscore GW, 7-2, over the next two periods, before the Colonials scored three goals in the fourth quarter for the final margin.

Sophomore Kathryn Shehan (Chicago, IL) and freshman Amy Moren (Burbank, CA) each scored twice to lead GW offensively, while senior co-captain Amy Heinemann (N. Miami Beach, FL) recorded seven saves in goal.

In their second game against the Bison, the Colonials trailed just 2-0 after the first period. GW would score twice in the second quarter to make it close, but Bucknell put up three more scores and led 5-2 at halftime. Bucknell's aggresiveness eventually began to take a toll on the Colonials, as evidenced by four unanswered goals to begin the third quarter which put the game out of reach.

Sophomore Erin Bailey (Ann Arbor, MI) scored twice to lead GW, while Shehan scored the Colonials' other goal. Heinemann, GW's lone senior on the squad, notched 15 saves in her final contest.

GW finishes the season 10-15 overall and for the first time does not qualify for the CWPA Eastern Championship.
