Women’s Water Polo Falls to Saint Francis

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The George Washington women’s water polo team dropped its opening game in the Collegiate Water Polo Association Championship to Saint Francis on Friday afternoon, 11-10.

GW held a 10-7 lead with 5:46 remaining in the game after Jacqueline Bywater’s fourth goal of the contest, but Saint Francis responded by closing the game on a 4-0 run to take the victory. The Red Flash tied it up, 10-10, on a goal from Emily Wickenheiser with 56 seconds remaining, then scored the game-winner as time expired on another goal from Wickenheiser.

The Colonials held a 7-2 halftime lead before Saint Francis pulled closer by winning the third quarter, 4-2. The teams then exchanged goals early in the fourth before the Red Flash went on their decisive run.

Scarlett Hallahan added three goals to Bywater’s four, while Maddy Johnson, Ally Jochim and Allyson Bakos added one.

GW will play the loser of this afternoon’s Indiana-Harvard match on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
