Women's Water Polo Opens Season at Princeton Invitational

Feb. 11, 2005

WASHINGTON, DC - The GW women's water polo team kicks off the 2005 campaign with four matches at the Princeton Invitational on Feb. 12-13. The Colonials will play Villanova at 2:50 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 12 followed by a contest versus Marist at 8:00 p.m. On Sunday Feb. 13, GW will compete against Brown at 8:30 a.m. and Wagner at 2:20 p.m.

The women's water polo program is entering its seventh year of existence and has reached the CWPA Eastern Championship every year in its first six seasons. Coach Scott Reed has been at the helm of the program since its inception and guided the squad to its best finish at the Southern Championship (second place) in 2004.

Co-captain Kendra Shanley is the squad's top returning scorer. She tallied 53 points last season on her way to Southern Divison All-Conference second-team honors. Junior goalkeeper Amy Heinemann also returns to lead the GW defense. Heinemann is already the Colonials' career leader in goals-against average at 6.29 and is six saves short of tying the career saves record.

This weekend's competition is the first for all four of the Colonials opponents.

GW went 1-3 at the Princeton Invitational last season, scoring a victory over Wagner, 10-7.
